Peak Explorations, LLC is a pioneer in global adventure/trekking tours that aims to create jobs for the locals in mountain regions of developing countries such as Peru, Nepal, Mongolia, Tanzania, South Africa etc. We are based in the Washington, DC area but our clients are from all parts of the world. We market life-changing and authentic adventure tours that cater to solo travelers or otherwise who love mountain trekking/hiking and the outdoors. Peak Explorations is a social enterprise that is committed to empowering our clients to experience a life changing adventure while at the same time making a positive impact on the lives of the locals who directly work on the mountain trails as guides, porters, cooks and all members of the trek guiding team. We also aim to promote women and diversity in the outdoors and in the mountain trekking tourism industry.
We are seeking an intern who is aligned with the above mission and preferably who has at least a year experience in social media marketing. The job requires 10 hours weekly or more with 30 minute consultation weekly or more, as needed. This is ideal for high school or college students who wish to gain experience and/or receive credit.
In this position, you will be a part of a team of travelers, hikers, mountain fanatics, photographers, trail leaders, video producers among others who play a role in the outdoors industry. You will quickly immerse yourself in the nuances and various aspects of running a social enterprise that focuses on the outdoors. You will be instrumental in creating a marketing strategy via social media. You will have tons of opportunities to get involved in our projects including the film project that promotes women in the outdoors media and a scholarship program to help female porters to become lead guides for Kilimanjaro climbs. We are looking for individuals who believe in our mission and the importance of promoting hiking and the outdoors as a healthy lifestyle for all.
Note that this internship is an unpaid position. We will work closely with the intern to provide supervision and guidance in the development of internship activities.
At least 1 year experience with social media marketing (can be business or personal experience).
Must be creative and have some background creating business strategies, e.g. how social media can effectively promote the business and its vision or brand to cultivate a pool of long-term clients/followers.
Must be able to integrate the different forms of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc...) to the extent that a uniformity in the branding of the social enterprise is accomplished.
Must have the ability to create relevant content to cater to our target audience consists of hikers, travelers and outdoors-lovers.
Must be a team player and able to collaborate with the Peak Explorations team to include photographers, video producers, PR consultants, grant writers, trail leaders etc.
Must be able to communicate with potential clients/sponsors/partners and establish relationships with them.
Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Must be able to identify a target market and “speak” to consumer through social media.
Must be able to prioritize and complete assignments by established deadlines.
Must have initiative to come up with fresh ideas on how to grow our online presence.
Experience with digital media software is a plus (i.e., Photoshop, Filmora or other graphic design software, is a plus).
Willingness to learn.
Must be independent, a self-starter and reliable.
Excellent personality & love for hiking or the outdoors is ideal, but not required.
You must know how to have fun and play - after all, we are outdoorsy!
As an intern, you will perform the following tasks:
Research industry resources for news and information relevant to our target audience.
Monitoring social media presence on multiple networks – and posting daily, or as required.
Creating web, print and graphic content.
Assisting with organizational marketing and planning tasks.
Identifying gaps and areas of improvement for marketing.
Writing blogs and developing other marketing campaigns.
Tracking analytics – including search engine optimization to measure the growth and impact of social media on our business, and
developing action-steps to increase impact.
Seeking events, venues, websites and opportunities to showcase our business and drive sales.
