Seeing Machu Picchu in person is on every hiker's bucket list! This is a special trip for women only. The group will be led by a team of all-female guide and porters from the Quechua community. Joining us on this journey means supporting women trail leaders of Peru and the local economy. Plus, this is an off the beaten path that will take you to Machu Picchu with lesser crowd and a more intimate experience with mother nature in the gorgeous Andes mountains. The trek allows you to camp in the wilderness, soak in the hot spring of Aguas Caliente, visit Machu Picchu over a period of two days, and do the climb up Huayna Picchu for an incredible bird's eye view of the ruins. You also spend time walking in the old part of Lima and visit the beautiful town of Cusco and the Sacred Valley.
As a finale, we will take you to an actual mountain community, Huilloc Alto, above the quaint town of Ollantaytambo for a day visit to meet some of the porters, their wives who are weavers and their children. Huilloc Alto recently opened its doors to tourism and is known to be the place where the original porters came from who are the core foundation of the trekking tourism industry in Cusco. We will learn more about their culture, history and daily lives and directly interact with the weavers who still to this day create textile products by hand. Oftentimes, on a trek, we do now get a chance to immerse ourselves with the Quechua culture and community, and especially lack the opportunity to get to know the porters and their lives. At Peak Explorations, we believe the Quechua people are as much of a cultural heritage as the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu as their lives are intertwined closely with the Andes and the history of this part of the world.
Our trek is operated by our local partner, Evolution Treks Peru. As partners, we are creating new best practices for the treatment of porters in the Cusco region and decolonizing the the trekking tourism industry.
